I learned way back in figurative anatomy modelling class that the way you add on clay matters-- the size and shape of the little blobs and beads are worth paying attention to because they affect the whole spirit, fullness, and directionality of the form. I also learned that smoothing too soon makes you less likely to correct your mistakes,-- something that definitely applies to needle felting as well as sculpting in clay.
