On #ThisDayInHistory in 1966, nearly 140,000 cubic yards of black slurry cascaded down the hill above Aberfan, a small mining village in Wales. A 40-foot-high wave of coal waste leveled buildings, including homes and part of a school, killing 144 people, most of them children. This disaster became one of the U.K.’s worst mining disasters.
