This is an excellent example of how a puffball mushroom expels spores! 🍄💨 Spores are typically dispersed by rain, wind, or interactions with wildlife. A person coming along and “puffing the spores” (as seen here) is harmless for both the fungi and the human. It’s puffball season in the high country. We have numerous species in several genera, but as long as they are white and even textured on the inside, without a separate cap and stem, they can be used for food. I like them peeled first and then sautéed, breaded and baked into puffball parmigiana, or grilled in thick slices and used as a wrap.
