Little #dumbo in the deep #Ocean #Grimpoteuthis is a genus of pelagic cirrate (finned) octopods known as the dumbo octopuses. The name "dumbo" originates from their resemblance to the title character of Disney's 1941 film Dumbo, having two prominent ear-like fins which extend from the mantle above each eye. Dumbo octopus are famous for their striking resemblance to the beloved flying elephant. These creatures have large fins (not ears) on their mantle, which they use to gracefully “flap” through the water. The octopus featured in this video Grimpoteuthis, the official octopus nicknamed “Dumbo.” Our last post showed a member of the genus Cirrothauma, and while it is a cirrate octopod with flapping fins, it is *not* Grimpoteuthis.
