In the marvelous and bawdy Metomorphoses, also known as Asinus aureus ("The Golden Ass"), composed sometime in the third quarter of the second century CE by the Numidian author and Isis-cult initiate Apuleius of Madaurus (now in Algeria). In the story a man named Lucius, obsessed with Thessalian magic, botches a transformati

Dr. Colleen Darnell on Instagram: "Inspired by the fashion of 1920s cabaret, I wear two ensembles on the stage of the historic @trinityonmain in New Britain, CT. The beaded cabaret pants (from @madame.e.vintage) are true vintage from the 1920s, and I like to imagine them having been in action on a stage in Berlin (their point of origin). The serpent costume is a design created by Natacha Ramova, but never made -- until @sweet.arrogance and @chanelledemai brought it to life. It is interesting to

Dr. Colleen Darnell on Instagram: "We like to think of this as an Art Deco incarnation of Wonder Woman. Diana, the princess of the Amazons, is a borrowing from Ancient Greek myths about a tribe of warrior women. In ancient images, the Amazons wear male-style chitons with one breast exposed or Scythian attire. Like the defeat of the centaurs, victory against the Amazons was a way for the Greeks after the Persian War to encode their triumphs by 480 BCE. The ancient Egyptians had no comparable myth

Dr. Colleen Darnell on Instagram: "Frolicking in @harknesspark wearing one of my favorite 1920s dresses, with all period accessories. Harkness Memorial State Park includes a historic home (constructed between 1906-1907) and extensive gardens (based on the 1920s designs of landscape architect Beatrix Jones Farrand). This juxtaposition is reminiscent of complexes of elaborate homes (palaces) and gardens (especially temple gardens) at the city of Akhet-Aten, the capitol of Akhenaten and Nefertiti.

I model a magnificent 1920s dress from @morphew_vintage, paired with an equally spectacular cocoon coat (made of 1920s material) from @morphew_atelier (both are available). I pair the blue pieces with a French rock crystal and glass necklace (Lalique in style) from my collection, and the color and material provides the basis for the Egyptology lesson today. Alth

In the previous caption with this suit, I described how Hatshepsut used clothing and art to express her role as king, as well as the uncertainty about what she actually wore. Hatshepsut is unusual because she did not simply rule as regent to her young nephew Thutmose III, but became a co-pharaoh. At the same t

Dr. Colleen Darnell on Instagram: "Announcing my next three-part Zoom Egyptology class PARTY LIKE AN ANCIENT EGYPTIAN, starting August 27th. The first three lines “Follow your heart! Celebrate a holiday! For a man cannot take his possessions with him” are quotations from a text known as the “Song of Antef,” written on a papyrus in the hieratic script (the cursive form of hieroglyphs, which is the usual way of writing on papyrus) dating most likely to the reign of Ramesses II, 1279-1213 BCE. The fine muslin and the shawls that were often paired with the solid white dresses were imported from India (the shawl I wear is nineteenth century from India). Trading connections between the Mediterranean world, Africa, and the Indian subcontinent and southeast Asia were already well established by th

I was honored to be part of her incredible vision “The End of Time.” @aliadiab_ imagined a near apocalyptic scene where a revelation is found in a papyrus and Old Kingdom hieroglyphic inscriptions—a wonderful combination of Alia’s passion for her cultural heritage (check out her account for wonderful images from the Egyptian expedition’s discoveries at Saqqara) and artistic

In this five-part class, we will explore some of the topics that Becky and I discuss here--and much, much more. What is the reality behind an animated mummy named Imhotep? (and what does his real life tell us about the meaning of the pyramids?) Why are scarabs such important symbols (hint: they do not eat human

Dr. Colleen Darnell on Instagram: "Visiting the temple of Kom Ombo including its picturesque hypostyle hall. While a Second Intermediate Period town existed already at the site, the temple is Ptolemaic, begun during the reign of Ptolemy VI. Some of the most fascinating reliefs are those of Ptolemy VIII, his sister (and wife) Cleopatra II, and his neice (and also wife) Cleopatra III—even more shocking, Cleopatra II is the mother of Cleopatra III. And yet, in a continuation of the ancient Egyptian

This mammisi at Dendera is dedicated to the divine child Harsomus (a Greek version of the ancient Egyptian name Horus who unites the Two Lands), related to Ihy, who is nor

Dr. Colleen Darnell on Instagram: "According to Herodotus, Egypt is the “gift of the Nile.” This is a frequently misunderstood pun, based on the fact that one of the common words for the Nile Valley region of Egypt was “Kemet,” the black land, referencing the alluvial soil that was indeed deposited (“gifted”) by the annual flood. Modern authors writing about ancient Egypt often claim that roads were unnecessary, because the Nile was such a great thoroughfare. This ignores two facts: 1) for part

Feminist magazines and women’s empowerment have a long pedigree in Egypt. In the 1920s, Art deco fashions and flapper lifestyles were not confined to the Western world. Some prominent actresses, singers, and writers in Cairo in that decade embraced flapper fashion, and, like in the United States and elsewhere in the world, used liberation in dre
