The Gimbel’s Philadelphia flagship store opened in 1893 when the Gimbel brothers purchased the bankrupt Haines and Company dry goods store at Ninth and Market Streets. Over time, the store expanded eastward to Eighth Street. In 1927, an extension south to Chestnut Street was completed, and the store occupied an entire city block, briefly becoming the largest department store in the world. In 1977, Gimbels relocated to The Gallery mall across Market Street. The original buildings were demolished
