Although being an anesthesiologist assistant can be rewarding, it’s not always rainbows and butterflies. Hospitals can be short staffed, schedules overbooked, emergency after emergency, patients extremely sick and difficult to manage. There will be days where you jump from case to case without any downtime until the end of your shift. Even though it’s common for anesthesiologist assistants to work long hours, we get multiple breaks throughout our shift! There are also chairs for us to sit in the OR so we aren’t standing the whole time. This is a huge difference compared to the surgeons and residents operating- they rarely break while they are operating.
