Originally by Merle Haggard, the Dead covered this song so beautifully until 1973. Haggard stated that the song was based on his experiences as an inmate at San Quentin State Prison with inspiration from famous inmates Caryl Chessman and James Kendrick- both people who were notorious death row occupants. Sing Me Back Home is a haunting story with a lonely yet gorgeous melody. It makes you wonder what truly made the Grateful Dead so attached to it for several years. Was it just a song of the time
