If the #OceanTwilightZone had a yearbook, the basking shark would definitely be named “Most Chill.” This massive shark gets its relaxed reputation from the way it seems to “bask” in warm surface waters, in almost every ocean around the world. Their eating style is called “ram feeding” but in reality it’s pretty passive: a basking shark will swim slowly through dense patches of zooplankton, filtering out the water through gill rakers encircling its head. 📲 Chill out with some fun basking shark f

Have you ever seen these before? 🧐 This is called a Sea Salp! These salps are semi-transparent barrel-shaped zooplankton resembling jellyfish 🪼 Salps are Tunicates, which are the second most abundant class of zooplankton (the first being copepods)! 😱 Salps are found worldwide in depths from surface level to 5,000ft deep! 🌊 Salps are filter feeders that pump water through their hollow bodies and sieve out phytoplankton 🦠 Larval salps have a notochord running down their back, making them one

Solmissus, or dinner plate jellyfish, is a genus of hydrozoans. As a hydrozoan jellyfish, it differs from a true jellyfish in that it is a colony of many tiny organisms known as zooids. According to wikipedia: “Its species are unique among cnidarians in that they actively hunt for prey as opposed to passively waiting for plankton to pass by. They are found in the deep waters of Monterey Bay, California. They are most likely to be found in the deep sea, mid-water (700–1,000 m (2,300–3,300 ft)). T
