New Orleans was founded on May 7, 1718, by the French Mississippi Company under the leadership of Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville. The city was named after Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, who was then Regent of France. At the time of its founding, New Orleans had a population of around 300 people, including French settlers, African slaves, and Native Americans.
