SAFFRON… the world’s most expensive spice 💰 Late summer is the perfect time to plant saffron (Crocus sativus) corms if you want to try your hand at growing this delicious spice. Plants do best in well-draining soil (mucky soil will likely lead to rot) and full sun will promote the best flowering. Corms should be planted 3–4” deep and roughly 3” apart. Saffron is a fascinating plant - in the crocus genus, it grows from little corms that throw out long green spindly leaves and low blooming flowers that produce three orange-red stigmas. These three stigmas ARE what we know as saffron in a spice jar.
