''Within this Enclosure Rest the remains of Gen.l George Washington." Inside this Tomb are two sarcophagi containing the remains of George and Martha Washington. George Washington was not originally buried here. When he died in 1799, he was placed in the Old Tomb but left explicit instructions for a new tomb to be built.
